Cape Town: South Africa's Mother City

Cape Town needs no introduction. Famous the world over as the city at the end of the African continent it is bordered by the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. It is affectionately called the Mother City by South Africans. Nestled between Table Mountain and Robben Island, both national heritage sites, the iconic settlement has long been the destination to end all destinations and that popularity does not seem to be waning.

From a lively arts culture and a thriving restaurant scene, to amazing adventure sports opportunities and a blistering music scene, Cape Town has it all. Surrounded by mountains and sea, the city is often the first port of call for travellers to South Africa – and with good reason – making it the most popular tourist destination in the country. World class beaches are found along the coastline of this beautiful city, offering surfing, swimming or just relaxing on the beach and watching the sunset. Cape Town even has its own style of architecture, known as Cape Dutch, and one of the joys of a visit is simply wandering around the older parts of town seeking out architectural treasures. The city is also a sports hub, with cricket, football and rugby being popular spectator events.

If dining is what appeals it is no surprise that Cape Town has a huge range of options catering for every budget, ranging from unpretentious African fare and traditional Cape Malay food to glitzy French and Italian restaurants - and everything in between. Given the proximity to the Cape Wine Route, it comes as no surprise that the local wines on offer are amongst the best in the world.

What’s more, Cape Town is a great destination for a family holiday and has plenty of things to keep the kids amused from dawn until dusk. The Two Oceans Aquarium has ragged toothed sharks, seals, penguins and turtles, as well as its own kelp forest. There are a host of other things that kids will enjoy as well, from a planetarium and pony riding to bowling and climbing. The beaches will attract all to swim, surf and soak up the sun. Hike Table Mountain or Newlands Forrest, both have trials the whole family can enjoy.

Cape Town won the bid for the biennially World Design Capital starting in 2014. This is a city promotion celebrating the merits of design, highlighting accomplishments of a city to improve social, cultural and economic life in the city. This means that Cape Town will host World Design Capital Signature Events. These enable lots of opportunities for the local communities and creative minds to get involved. They can contribute as suppliers, speakers, partners, exhibitors and partners.  The global spotlight will be on Cape Town, with many local initiatives getting much needed exposure.

Cape Town plays host to some not to be missed festivals, sporting events and entertainment. The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle tour and the Cape Town Two Oceans Marathon take place annually, as does the Cape Epic, a gruelling 8 day mountain bike challenge in the Western Cape. The J&B Met is the most prestigious horse race in the Cape and takes place in February. The Cape Town Jazz festival showcases local and international musicians and attracts fans from all around the world. The SA Navy festival, Decorex Cape Town and the Good Food and Wine Festival all attract visitors to the Mother City.
